Purpose of the Fund
The Funeral Fund provides $1,000 in financial assistance to eligible Aboriginal families experiencing hardship during Sorry Business. The support is designed to help cover essential funeral expenses, so no family has to face these costs alone.
Who Can Apply?
The program is currently open to Aboriginal families in the Gunnedah, Narrabri, Quirindi and Moree region based on community need and capacity.
Eligible Costs
Funds can be used for funeral-related expenses, including:
- Burial
- Cremation
- Other funeral costs (e.g. flowers, wake arrangements, transport)
Why it Matters?
Sorry Business is one of the most sacred responsibilities we hold as Aboriginal people. Funerals are a time to honour, farewell, and uphold cultural obligations.
But the reality is:
- Funerals are expensive.
- Many families are already living with financial hardship and intergenerational poverty.
- Without support, families may fall into debt or miss out on the cultural and family traditions that give Sorry Business its meaning.
This fund cannot take away every challenge, but it will help ease the pressure so families can carry out Sorry Business with the respect and dignity their loved ones deserve.
